Jessica Reyez was born on June 12, 1991, in Toronto, Ontario, to Colombian parents. Her early exposure to music, particularly the guitar through her father, fostered her artistic development. She began writing her own music during high school, eventually pursuing it professionally after graduating. In 2012, Reyez moved to Florida, where she supported herself through bartending and busking. She returned to Toronto in 2014 and was accepted into The Remix Project’s Academy of Recording Arts. During her time at The Remix Project, she received mentorship from Daniel Daley of Dvsn, which led to her music being heard by King Louie. This period marked a significant turning point in her career trajectory.
In 2016, Reyez released her single “Figures,” which gained considerable attention, reaching number 58 on the Canadian Hot 100 and achieving triple platinum certification by Music Canada. The following year, her debut EP, “Kiddo” (2017), earned her the Breakthrough Artist award at the 2018 Juno Awards. Her subsequent EP, “Being Human in Public” (2018), received the R&B/Soul Recording of the Year at the 2019 Juno Awards and a Grammy nomination for Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 2020 Grammy Awards. She has also written songs for various artists, including Calvin Harris, Kehlani, Dua Lipa, and Normani, notably co-penning the hit “One Kiss.” Her debut studio album, “Before Love Came to Kill Us” (2020), was met with critical acclaim and commercial success, peaking at number 13 on the US Billboard 200. In 2022, she released her second studio album, “Yessie,” which featured a collaboration with 6lack. Throughout her career, Reyez has demonstrated consistent artistic growth and commercial performance.
