About

Miguel Orlando Collins, known professionally as Sizzla Kalonji or Sizzla, was born on April 17, 1976, in St. Mary, Jamaica, into a devout Rastafarian family. He was raised in August Town, Kingston, where he pursued mechanical engineering studies at Dunoon High School. Sizzla began his musical career by developing his distinctive style within the Caveman Hi-Fi sound system. His recording journey formally commenced in 1995 with a release on the Zagalou label, followed by collaborations with producer Bobby Digital Dixon on a series of singles. A pivotal moment in his early career was working with Dean Fraser, who introduced him to Philip “Fatis” Burrell’s Xterminator Family in 1995. This collaboration led to the release of his debut album, “Burning Up,” marking a significant entry into the reggae industry.

Sizzla’s career progressed rapidly with notable releases such as “Praise Ye Jah” (1997) and the Dixon-produced “Black Woman & Child” in the same year. The title track from “Black Woman & Child” became a cultural reggae anthem, contributing to his growing recognition. Throughout 1997, he achieved further success with hits like “Like Mountain,” “Babylon Cowboy,” “Kings of the Earth,” and the duet “Build a Better World” with Luciano. This period marked the beginning of an exceptionally productive phase in his recording career. His commitment to Rastafarian values and social consciousness resonated with audiences, establishing him as a leading figure in contemporary reggae.

Over his career, Sizzla has released more than 45 solo albums and over fifteen combination albums, transcending various reggae genres. He founded his own record company, Kalonji Records, which, in partnership with Damon Dash Music Group and Koch Records, released “The Overstanding” in 2006. Many of his albums have appeared on Billboard’s Top Reggae Albums chart, with “Words of Truth” reaching No. 5. In 2013, his album “The Messiah” earned him his first Grammy Award nomination. In August 2025, Sizzla received the Key to the City of Lauderhill and a special citation from the United States Congress, honoring his three decades of contributions to reggae music and his role as a cultural ambassador.
