About

Born on August 25, 1970, in Framingham, Massachusetts, Jo Dee Marie Messina developed an early passion for music, drawing inspiration from country figures like Patsy Cline and Reba McEntire. By the age of 16, Messina was performing in local clubs with her siblings. Recognizing the limitations of the Northeast for a country music career, she relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, at 19. While working various temporary jobs, she entered talent contests, which eventually led her to producer Byron Gallimore. Initially signed and then dropped by RCA Records due to a management change, Messina soon found a new home at Curb Records with the support of Gallimore and Tim McGraw, who became co-producers of her studio albums.

Messina made her debut in 1996 with her self-titled album, which included the successful single “Heads Carolina, Tails California” and was certified gold by the RIAA. Despite early financial difficulties, her career experienced a significant breakthrough with her 1998 album, “I’m Alright,” which produced three number-one country hits: “Bye, Bye,” “I’m Alright,” and “Stand Beside Me.” This album sold over two million copies and earned a double-platinum certification. In 2000, Messina received the Country Music Association’s Horizon Award and continued her success with the album “Burn,” featuring the number-one single “That’s the Way” and later, “Bring On the Rain” a duet with Tim McGraw that also became an Adult Contemporary hit. She also released a Greatest Hits album in 2003 and the studio album “Delicious Surprise” in 2005, which featured another number-one hit, “My Give a Damn’s Busted.”

In 2013, Messina embarked on an independent career, funding her album “Me” through a Kickstarter campaign and releasing it on her own Dreambound Records label in 2014. Her independent spirit allowed her creative control over her music. She has continued to perform and release new material, including faith-based songs like “Bigger Than This” (2018) and “Reckless Love” (2018), and “Just To Be Loved” (2023). Messina remains an active presence in country music, engaging with fans through social media and performing extensively, with recent tours demonstrating her continued popularity and commitment to sharing her music and personal story.
