About

John Cameron Fogerty, born on May 28, 1945, in Berkeley, California, laid the groundwork for his extensive musical career early in life. In 1959, while still in junior high, Fogerty formed The Blue Velvets with Stu Cook and Doug Clifford. This group, inspired by rock and roll pioneers like Little Richard and Bo Diddley, eventually saw the addition of John’s brother, Tom Fogerty. The band’s early journey included a period as The Golliwogs after signing with Fantasy Records in 1964, during which they released seven singles that did not achieve significant commercial success. This period of development honed Fogerty’s songwriting and performance skills, preparing him for future milestones.

In 1968, the band transformed into Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR), with John Fogerty becoming the lead singer, lead guitarist, and principal songwriter. CCR rapidly rose to prominence, achieving nine top-10 singles and eight gold albums between 1968 and 1972. Notable songs from this era, all penned by Fogerty, include “Proud Mary,” “Bad Moon Rising,” “Fortunate Son,” “Green River,” “Down on the Corner,” “Who’ll Stop the Rain,” “Up Around the Bend,” and “Have You Ever Seen the Rain.” The band’s success, however, was accompanied by internal conflicts, leading to Tom Fogerty’s departure in 1971 and the band’s eventual disbandment in 1972 after the release of their final album, *Mardi Gras*.

Following the breakup of CCR, Fogerty embarked on a solo career, initially releasing a country and western covers album in 1973 under the moniker The Blue Ridge Rangers. His first official solo album, *John Fogerty*, was released in 1975, featuring the hit “Rockin’ All Over the World.” After a period of legal challenges and a hiatus, Fogerty’s career saw a resurgence with the 1985 album *Centerfield*, yielding a top-10 hit in “The Old Man Down the Road” and the enduring title track. He continued to release successful albums such as *Blue Moon Swamp* (1997), which won a Grammy for Best Rock Album, and *Revival* (2007). In 2023, after a five-decade struggle, Fogerty regained worldwide control of the publishing rights to his Creedence Clearwater Revival songs, a significant personal and professional achievement.
