About

Benjamin Evans Rector was born on November 6, 1986, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He began learning piano as a child and later took up the acoustic guitar at 16, which led him to songwriting. He attended Tulsa’s Metro Christian Academy, where a praise and worship class sparked his initial interest in music. During high school, he formed a band called Euromart and performed locally. Rector later graduated from the University of Arkansas in 2010 with a degree in business and marketing. His early independent releases began during his college years, laying the groundwork for his professional music career.

Rector’s career has been characterized by consistent album releases and chart success. He gained wider recognition with albums like “Into the Morning” (2010), which charted on Billboard’s Top Heatseekers, and “Something Like This” (2011), which debuted on the Billboard 200. His 2015 album “Brand New” marked a significant milestone, becoming his first album to enter the Top 10 on the Billboard 200 and topping the Billboard Folk chart. The lead single, “Brand New,” achieved RIAA Gold certification in 2020 and Platinum certification in 2023. His 2018 album “Magic” also peaked at No. 1 on Billboard US Folk and No. 2 on Billboard US Rock and US Indie charts, further solidifying his position as a successful independent artist with his own label, OK Kid Recordings.

Throughout his career, Rector has maintained an active touring schedule, regularly performing sold-out shows across the United States. Notable tours include The Old Friends Acoustic Tour and symphonic performances with Cody Fry, including two sold-out nights at the Kennedy Center. His music has received airplay across various radio formats, including Hot AC, Top 40, Country, AAA, and Christian stations. Rector has made numerous television appearances on shows such as “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” “Conan,” “The Today Show,” “Good Morning America,” and “American Idol” as a celebrity mentor. His songs have been featured in over 100 major television shows, ad campaigns, and movies, demonstrating his broad appeal and commercial success.
