John Robert Hiatt was born on August 20, 1952, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He is a singer-songwriter and musician who has explored various musical styles throughout his career, including new wave, blues, and country. Hiatt learned to play the guitar at age 11 and began his musical journey in Indianapolis, performing in local clubs and with bands. At 18, he moved to Nashville, Tennessee, and secured a songwriting position with Tree-Music Publishing Company, where he recorded approximately 250 songs he composed. In 1972, he joined the band White Duck before embarking on a solo career.
Hiatt signed with Epic Records in 1973, releasing his first single, “We Make Spirit,” and his debut album, “Hangin’ Around the Observatory,” in 1974. Although his early solo albums received critical attention, they did not achieve significant commercial success. His composition, “Sure As I’m Sittin’ Here,” became a Top 40 hit for Three Dog Night in 1974. Over the following decade, Hiatt continued to release albums with MCA and Geffen Records, evolving his style while garnering a dedicated European fan base. Numerous artists, including Rosanne Cash and Freddy Fender, covered his songs during this period, enhancing his reputation as a songwriter.
Hiatt achieved widespread critical and commercial recognition with his 1987 album, “Bring the Family,” which featured a backing band of Ry Cooder, Nick Lowe, and Jim Keltner. This album produced popular songs like “Have a Little Faith in Me” and “Memphis in the Meantime.” His 1988 album, “Slow Turning,” yielded his only top 10 chart single, the title track. His songs have been covered by prominent artists such as Bonnie Raitt, who took “Thing Called Love” to number 11 on the US charts. In 2021, he released “Leftover Feelings” with the Jerry Douglas Band, which received a Grammy nomination. Hiatt has been nominated for nine Grammy Awards and has received multiple industry distinctions, including the Americana Music Association Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting in 2008.
