Joseph is an American folk band that originated in Portland, Oregon, featuring sisters Natalie Closner, Allison Closner, and Meegan Closner. The band formed when Natalie, who had been pursuing a solo career, invited her younger twin sisters, Meegan and Allison, to join her. They adopted the name Joseph as a tribute to both the town of Joseph, Oregon, and their grandfather, Joe. The group self-released their debut album, “Native Dreamer Kin,” in 2014, building an initial following through intimate house shows where they performed as an acoustic trio with guitar and foot drum.
In 2015, Joseph signed with ATO Records. They subsequently released the acoustic two-song digital “ATO Sessions” EP. Their second album, “I’m Alone, No You’re Not,” produced by Mike Mogis, was released on August 26, 2016. This album debuted at number one on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart for two consecutive weeks. The lead single, “White Flag,” premiered on NPR’s Songs We Love and reached number one on the Adult Alternative Songs chart in October 2016, also charting on Spotify’s US Viral Top Ten days after its release. Their television debut occurred on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” followed by appearances on “Later… with Jools Holland,” “Ellen,” “CONAN,” “CBS This Morning,” and NBC’s “TODAY.” They also toured with James Bay and performed at major festivals including Coachella, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, and Glastonbury.
The band continued to release music, including the seven-track EP “Stay Awake” in 2017. Their third studio album, “Good Luck, Kid,” was released on September 13, 2019, followed by “The Sun” on April 28, 2023. In August 2024, the band announced Allison would be stepping away, and they released “Starting Over At The End” as a duo. Joseph has consistently evolved their sound, incorporating elements of pop while maintaining their signature harmony-driven style, and they continue to engage with their fanbase through new music and performances.
