Kelis is a talented American singer-songwriter, chef, and a true icon in the music industry. Born to a Puerto Rican and Chinese mother and an African American father in Harlem, New York City, Kelis Rogers began her musical journey at an early age. She was admitted to New York’s Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, where she learned to play the saxophone and won a spot in the Girls Choir of Harlem.
After completing high school, Kelis signed with Virgin Records and released her debut album, “Kaleidoscope,” in 1999. The album’s distinctive mix of R&B, hip-hop, and pop influences caught the attention of the music industry and fans alike, leading to her first hit single “Caught Out There.” Her sophomore album, “Wanderland,” which she wrote and produced herself, was released in 2001 and was met with critical acclaim.
Over the course of her career, Kelis has released six studio albums and collaborated with prominent artists such as Busta Rhymes, Andre 3000, and Nas. Her third album, “Tasty,” released in 2003, included the chart-topping hit “Milkshake”, which won her a Grammy nomination and solidified her status as a pop-culture icon.
In addition to her successful music career, Kelis is also a trained chef. In 2006, she graduated from Le Cordon Bleu with a certificate in culinary arts and has since shown her culinary skills on her own cooking show, “Saucy and Sweet,” and published a cookbook, “My Life on a Plate: Recipes From Around the World.”
