Juliana Hatfield

Juliana Hatfield was born on July 27, 1967, in Wiscasset, Maine. Growing up in Duxbury, Massachusetts, her early musical influences spanned from punk rock to mainstream pop. While attending Berklee College of Music in 1986, Hatfield co-founded the indie rock band Blake Babies, releasing four albums between 1987 and 1991, which garnered critical acclaim from publications such as Rolling Stone and The Village Voice. Following the Blake Babies’ initial disbandment in 1992, she joined The Lemonheads as their bassist, contributing to their 1992 breakthrough album, “It’s a Shame About Ray.” She later returned to The Lemonheads as a guest vocalist in 1993.

Hatfield’s solo career began with her debut album, “Hey Babe,” in 1992. Her commercial breakthrough came in 1993 with the formation of The Juliana Hatfield Three, featuring bassist Dean Fisher and drummer Todd Philips. Their album “Become What You Are” produced two hit singles, “My Sister” and “Spin the Bottle.” “Spin the Bottle” was also featured on the soundtrack for the 1994 film “Reality Bites.” After The Juliana Hatfield Three disbanded in 1994, Hatfield released the solo album “Only Everything” in 1995, which included the alternative radio hit “Universal Heartbeat.” In 2008, she released her memoir, “When I Grow Up: A Memoir.”

In 2014, The Juliana Hatfield Three reunited, leveraging the fan-funding platform PledgeMusic for their album “Whatever, My Love,” released in 2015. This marked their first album together in over two decades. Hatfield has continued to release a steady stream of solo material, including original works and several acclaimed cover albums such as “Juliana Hatfield Sings Olivia Newton-John” (2018), “Juliana Hatfield Sings The Police” (2019), and “Juliana Hatfield Sings ELO” (2023). Her career also includes collaborations with artists like Matthew Caws of Nada Surf, forming the duo Minor Alps, and Paul Westerberg, with whom she formed The I Don’t Cares.
