Kiefer Sutherland was born on December 21, 1966, in London, England, to Canadian actors Shirley Douglas and Donald Sutherland. Shortly after his birth, his family relocated to California. His maternal grandfather, Tommy Douglas, was a Scottish-born Canadian politician who served as Premier of Saskatchewan for over 17 years and led the national NDP party for nearly a decade. Sutherland embarked on his acting career with his first film role in the comedy-drama “Max Dugan Returns” in 1983. His breakthrough came with the Canadian drama “The Bay Boy” in 1984, which earned him a Genie award nomination for best actor. Following this success, he moved to Los Angeles, securing television appearances in “Amazing Stories” and the telefilm “Trapped in Silence” in 1986.
Throughout the 1990s, Sutherland established a significant presence in Hollywood. In 1992, he starred in “Article 99” and the military drama “A Few Good Men,” alongside notable actors like Jack Nicholson and Tom Cruise. He continued to take on diverse roles, including “The Vanishing” (1994) and the science fiction film “Dark City” (1998), which was featured at the Cannes Film Festival. In addition to acting, Sutherland also ventured into directing, with credits such as “Truth or Consequences, N.M.” (1997) where he also starred with Kevin Pollak and Martin Sheen. These early career milestones showcased his dedication and versatility in the entertainment industry.
The 2000s marked a significant turning point in Sutherland’s career with his iconic role as Jack Bauer in the Fox drama series “24” (2001–2010, 2014). This role garnered him widespread acclaim, including a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama Series and a Primetime Emmy Award in 2006 for the show’s fifth season. He also took on lead voice roles in video games like “Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes” and “Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain” as Big Boss. In recent years, Sutherland has expanded into music, releasing his debut album “Down in a Hole” in 2016 and subsequent albums like “Reckless and Me” in 2019. He has also starred in the ABC political drama series “Designated Survivor” (2016–2019) as President Tom Kirkman and appeared in films like “The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial” (2023), receiving praise for his performance.
