About

Adam Bainbridge, known professionally as Kindness, was born on May 7, 1982, in Peterborough, England. Bainbridge’s foundational work began in 2007 as a recipient of the Eric James Johnson Memorial Fellowship at The Philadelphia Institute for Advance Study, where they recorded the album ‘Live in Philly.’ This early work was distributed as a free MP3 download and CDr, marking their independent beginnings. Bainbridge’s career continued to develop with their debut single, ‘Swingin’ Party,’ released in 2009 by Moshi Moshi Records, which included the track ‘Gee Up’ and an accompanying VHS video directed by Jack Latham. In October 2011, Bainbridge released “Cyan” as a limited edition 12-inch vinyl through their own label, Female Energy, in the UK, and Terrible Records in North America.

Kindness released their debut album, ‘World, You Need a Change of Mind,’ on March 16, 2012, co-produced and mixed by Grammy Award-winning producer Philippe Zdar. This period included live sessions for BBC Radio 1 with Zane Lowe and Rob da Bank, and BBC Radio 6 Music’s ‘Lauren Laverne, Live from Maida Vale,’ along with a performance at the iTunes Festival 2012. In 2013, Kindness contributed to production and instrumentation on Blood Orange’s ‘Cupid Deluxe.’ Their second album, ‘Otherness,’ was released on October 13, 2014, featuring collaborations with artists such as Robyn, Dev Hynes, and Kelela. Bainbridge has also directed and co-directed music videos for artists including Grizzly Bear and Blood Orange.

Throughout their career, Bainbridge has been recognized for their work as a DJ, performing at renowned venues and events globally, and hosting a monthly radio show for Red Bull Music Academy from 2016-2017. Their production credits include significant projects such as Solange’s Grammy award-winning ‘A Seat at the Table,’ Blood Orange’s ‘Freetown Sound’ and ‘Negro Swan,’ Robyn’s ‘Honey,’ and Jessie Ware’s ‘What’s Your Pleasure?’ Bainbridge identifies as gender non-conforming and uses ‘they/them’ pronouns.
