Corinne Jacqueline Bailey Rae, born on February 26, 1979, in Leeds, England, is an English singer-songwriter. She was recognized as the number-one predicted breakthrough act of 2006 in the BBC’s annual Sound of 2006 poll. Her debut album, “Corinne Bailey Rae,” released in February 2006, achieved immediate success, becoming the fourth female British act to have her first album debut at number one. The album has since sold over four million copies globally. In 2007, she received three Grammy Award nominations and three Brit Award nominations, in addition to winning two MOBO Awards. Her collaboration on Herbie Hancock’s “River: The Joni Letters” earned her a Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 2008.
Following a three-year hiatus, Bailey Rae released her second album, “The Sea,” on January 26, 2010. This album earned her a nomination for the 2010 Mercury Prize for Album of the Year. In 2012, she was awarded a Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance for her cover of Bob Marley’s “Is This Love.” Her third album, “The Heart Speaks in Whispers,” released on May 13, 2016, debuted at number 2 on Billboard’s R&B chart. This album featured collaborations with notable musicians including Esperanza Spalding and Marcus Miller. In 2017, she recorded a cover of Coldplay’s “The Scientist” for the film “Fifty Shades Darker.” In 2023, she released her fourth album, “Black Rainbows,” inspired by her experiences with the Stony Island Arts Bank, a Chicago-based archive of Black art and culture.
Throughout her career, Bailey Rae has demonstrated versatility, from her early indie rock days with the band Helen to her current neo-soul and R&B sound. She has toured extensively, performing at major festivals like Glastonbury and supporting artists such as Stevie Wonder. Off-stage, she contributes as a special ambassador for charities like Cord and Pump Aid, focusing on peacebuilding and water and sanitation initiatives. She has also contributed to various film and television soundtracks, with her songs like “Like a Star” and “Put Your Records On” appearing in numerous productions.
