Robert Earl Keen

Robert Earl Keen was born on January 11, 1956, in Houston, Texas. During his teenage years, he demonstrated a strong aptitude for writing and literature and was influenced by British rock bands and country artists such as Willie Nelson. He began playing guitar and developing his songwriting skills while attending Texas A&M University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1978. During his college years, Keen shared a residence with future musician Lyle Lovett, and together they explored bluegrass and folk music.

After graduating from Texas A&M, Keen relocated to Austin, Texas, where he performed in various live-music venues. A significant turning point in his career occurred in 1983 when he won the New Folk competition at the Kerrville Folk Festival. The same year, he independently produced his first album, “No Kinda Dancer,” released in 1985. Following this, Keen moved to Nashville, securing a publishing deal, an independent label agreement, and representation from a national booking agent. While in Nashville, he also worked at Hatch Show Print.

Keen returned to Texas in 1987, releasing “The Live Album” in 1988 and “West Textures” in 1989. The latter album featured “The Road Goes on Forever,” which became a signature song. His career gained further momentum when Joe Ely recorded “The Road Goes on Forever” and “Whenever Kindness Fails” on his 1993 album, “Love and Danger.” Throughout his career, Keen has released 21 records and maintained an extensive touring schedule, leading to his ranking on Pollstar’s Top 20 Global Concert Tours in July 2021. He was also the first artist to be featured on the Americana Music Chart and the debut cover of The Gavin Report for Americana. In 2019, he launched the Americana Podcast to further promote artists in the genre. Keen received the Texas A&M Distinguished Alumni Award in 2018 and was inducted into both the Texas Heritage Songwriters’ Hall of Fame and The Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame. In January 2022, Keen announced he would cease touring after September 2022, concluding with his “I’m Coming Home Farewell Tour.” However, he performed several shows in 2023 and listed a 2024 tour, with subsequent edits to his Instagram posts removing the ‘farewell’ designation from past tour announcements.
