Ledisi Anibade Young, born on March 28, 1972, in New Orleans, Louisiana, began her musical journey performing with the New Orleans Symphony Orchestra at age eight. After moving to Oakland, California, she continued to pursue music, forming the funk band Anibade. Unable to secure a major label deal, Ledisi co-founded LeSun Music with musician Sundra Manning, releasing her debut album “Soulsinger” in 2000. Her second album, “Feeling Orange but Sometimes Blue” (2002), earned her “Outstanding Jazz Album” at the California Music Awards in 2003, showcasing her versatile vocal talent early in her career.
In 2006, Ledisi signed with Verve Forecast, releasing “Lost & Found” in 2007, which garnered two Grammy nominations, including Best New Artist. She continued to release successful albums, including “Turn Me Loose” (2009), which topped the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, and “Pieces of Me” (2011), which peaked at number eight on the Billboard 200 and earned a gold certification for its lead single. In 2020, Ledisi established her independent label, Listen Back Entertainment, releasing “The Wild Card.” Its single, “Anything for You,” became her first number-one hit on Billboard’s Adult R&B Songs chart and earned her a Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Performance in 2021. She has since released several more albums, including tribute albums “Ledisi Sings Nina” (2021) and “For Dinah” (2025).
Beyond music, Ledisi has built a career as an actress, portraying Mahalia Jackson in the films “Selma” (2014) and “Remember Me: The Mahalia Jackson Story” (2022). She also played Patti LaBelle in “American Soul” and Gladys Knight in “Spinning Gold” (2023). Her theatrical work includes roles in Broadway’s “Caroline, or Change” (2004) and Off-Broadway’s “Witness Uganda” (2019). Ledisi is an advocate for the arts, serving as a professor and artist-in-residence at Berklee College of Music and as President of the Recording Academy’s Los Angeles Chapter. She has also authored three books, including “Better Than Alright: Finding Peace, Love & Power” (2012) and “Don’t Ever Lose Your Walk: How to Embrace Your Journey” (2020).
