About

Kimberly Denise Jones, known professionally as Lil’ Kim, was born on July 11, 1974, in Brooklyn, New York City. She navigated a challenging adolescence, leaving home at 14 and dropping out of high school. Her early life on the streets led her to freestyle rap, influenced by female hip-hop artists like MC Lyte. In 1994, she was discovered by The Notorious B.I.G., who invited her to join his group Junior M.A.F.I.A. The group’s 1995 debut album, “Conspiracy,” featured two Top 20 singles in the U.S. and achieved gold certification. This early exposure provided a platform for her solo career.

Lil’ Kim launched her solo career in 1996 with the album “Hard Core.” This album was notable for being the highest-debuting female rap album at the time, reaching number 11 on the Billboard 200 and selling 78,000 copies in its first week. It eventually achieved double-platinum certification and sold over six million copies worldwide. Key singles from “Hard Core” included “No Time,” which topped the Hot Rap Tracks chart, and a remix of “Not Tonight” featuring Missy Elliott, Angie Martinez, Da Brat, and Left Eye, which peaked at number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. This period saw her establish herself with sexually charged lyrics and a unique fashion sense, leading to her adopting the moniker “Queen Bee” and becoming the first female rapper to have three consecutive number-one hits on the Billboard Hot Rap Tracks chart.

Her career continued to evolve with subsequent albums like “The Notorious K.I.M.” (2000), which debuted at number 4 on the Billboard 200 and quickly went platinum. A significant milestone was her feature on the 2001 single “Lady Marmalade” with Christina Aguilera, Pink, and Mýa, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks and earned her a Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals. Her third album, “La Bella Mafia” (2003), also achieved platinum status, featuring hits like “The Jump Off” and “Magic Stick.” In 2005, she released “The Naked Truth” while serving a one-year prison sentence for perjury, an album that received critical acclaim. Throughout the 2010s and into the present, Lil’ Kim has continued to release music, collaborate with other artists, and expand her ventures into television and fashion, maintaining her status as a cultural and fashion icon.
