About

Lin-Manuel Miranda was born on January 16, 1980, in New York City, to parents of Puerto Rican origin. His childhood exposed him to a blend of salsa and show tunes, shaping his diverse musical interests that spanned from opera to hip-hop. He attended Hunter College Elementary School and Hunter College High School in Manhattan, where he actively participated in the drama program. During his sophomore year at Wesleyan University in 1999, Miranda wrote the first draft of his musical “In the Heights.” This early work, which previewed in Connecticut in 2005 and opened Off-Broadway in 2007 before moving to Broadway in 2008, earned critical acclaim, including four Tony Awards. In 2003, Miranda also co-founded Freestyle Love Supreme, a hip-hop improv group that toured comedy festivals and made its Broadway debut in 2019.

Following the success of “In the Heights,” Miranda continued to expand his theatrical work. In 2011, he co-wrote the music and lyrics for “Bring It On: The Musical,” which premiered in Atlanta and later had a limited engagement on Broadway. A significant turning point in his career came after reading Ron Chernow’s biography of Alexander Hamilton in 2008. This inspired him to create “Hamilton,” a hip-hop musical that premiered Off-Broadway in 2015 and transferred to Broadway in August 2015. “Hamilton” became a cultural phenomenon, winning the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2016 and 11 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Book of a Musical for Miranda.

Miranda’s career also includes extensive work with Disney, starting in 2014 when he was hired to write music for the animated film “Moana.” His contributions to Disney have since expanded to include original songs for “Encanto” (2021) and “Vivo” (2021), as well as acting roles like Jack in “Mary Poppins Returns” (2018) and the voice of Hermes in “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” (2023). He made his directorial debut with the film “Tick, Tick… Boom!” in 2021. Throughout his career, Miranda has used his platform for activism, particularly on behalf of Puerto Rico, advocating for debt relief and actively participating in relief efforts after Hurricane Maria in 2017.
