About

Born Simbiatu Abisola Abiola Ajikawo on February 23, 1994, in Islington, London, to Nigerian parents, Little Simz grew up on a council estate. Her early experiences with music were fostered at St Mary’s Youth Club in Islington, which she credits as the starting point of her career. She pursued her music education at Westminster Kingsway College and The University of West London. Her music often explores rap and experimental sounds, drawing inspiration from grime, reggae, blues, synth-rock, and jazzy R&B. She cites hip-hop legends like Busta Rhymes, Nas, Biggie Smalls, and especially Lauryn Hill as significant influences, along with jazz artists such as Nina Simone and John Coltrane. Kendrick Lamar also recognized her talent early in her career.

Little Simz began her music career with a series of independent releases, culminating in her debut studio album, “A Curious Tale of Trials + Persons” in 2015. This was followed by “Stillness in Wonderland” in 2016. She gained broader recognition with her third album, “Grey Area” (2019), which earned a Mercury Prize nomination and won Best Album at both the Ivor Novello Awards and the NME Awards. Her fourth album, “Sometimes I Might Be Introvert” (2021), garnered widespread critical acclaim, recognized as one of the best albums of 2021 by several publications, and won the 2022 Mercury Prize and the Brit Award for Best New Artist. Her fifth album, “No Thank You” (2022), also received critical praise, delving into themes of the rap industry and mental health in Black communities.

In tandem with her musical pursuits, Little Simz has established an acting career. Her early roles included Vicky in the BBC children’s series “Spirit Warriors” (2010) and Meleka in the E4 series “Youngers.” She gained further prominence as Shelley in the Netflix revival of “Top Boy” (2019–2023) and made a cameo appearance as herself in the film “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” (2021), performing her song “Venom.” She has also toured extensively, supporting artists like Nas, Lauryn Hill, Kehlani, and Gorillaz, and performing at major festivals such as Glastonbury.
