Macy Gray

Natalie Renée McIntyre, professionally known as Macy Gray, was born on September 6, 1967, in Canton, Ohio. She began her musical journey by writing songs for a friend while attending the University of Southern California, eventually recording demo tracks herself when the intended vocalist did not appear. This led to early performances in jazz cafés in Los Angeles and eventually a record deal with Atlantic Records, which she was dropped from. It was later, in 1998, that she secured a record deal with Epic Records.

Gray’s commercial breakthrough came with her 1999 debut album, “On How Life Is,” which featured the hit single “I Try.” The song peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned her a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 2001. The album achieved triple-platinum status in the U.S. and quadruple-platinum in the UK, solidifying her presence in the music industry. Following this success, Gray released additional albums, “The Id” in 2001 and “The Trouble with Being Myself” in 2003, both of which saw charting success, particularly in the UK. She also began an acting career, appearing in films such as “Training Day” (2001) and “Spider-Man” (2002).

Throughout her career, Gray has collaborated with various artists and contributed to soundtracks, including “Rush Hour 2” (2001), Santana’s album “Shaman” (2002), and the “8 Mile” soundtrack. In 2014, she was inducted into the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame. Her later studio albums include “Big” (2007), “The Sellout” (2010), “Covered” (2012), “Talking Book” (2012), “The Way” (2014), “Stripped” (2016), and “Ruby” (2018). Notably, “Stripped” debuted at number three on the Billboard Jazz Chart. Gray has maintained an active career, participating in television shows like “The Masked Singer” in Australia (2021) and the U.S. (2023), and performing at events such as the NBA All-Star Game (2022).
