Matt Maher signed with Essential Records in early 2007 and released several albums through them, including 'Empty & Beautiful', 'Alive Again', 'The Love in Between', and 'Saints and Sinners'.
Matthew Guion Maher was born on November 10, 1974, in Newfoundland, Canada. Recognizing his musical talent early on, he pursued piano lessons and engaged in various musical activities, including concert and jazz ensembles, choir singing, and playing in a rock band. His post-secondary education began at Memorial University of Newfoundland before he transferred to Arizona State University, where he earned a music degree with a focus on jazz piano. He financed his initial college years by performing as a pianist in a hotel.
Maher’s career in Christian music officially began in 2000. His early works were released through Spirit and Song, a division of OCP Publications, where he produced three collections. In early 2007, Maher signed with Essential Records, leading to his major-label debut, “Empty and Beautiful,” in April 2008. This album quickly reached the Top 25 Christian Albums chart, marking the beginning of a successful journey that would see five of his albums consistently appear in the Top 10. His follow-up album, “Alive Again,” released in September 2009, peaked at No. 6 on Billboard’s Top Christian Albums chart. Throughout his career, Maher has consistently produced radio successes, writing and recording popular songs like “Lord, I Need You,” “Because He Lives (Amen),” and “Alive & Breathing.”
Beyond album releases and chart performance, Maher has made significant contributions to the Christian music landscape. He has written or co-written six No. 1 radio singles and collaborated with notable artists such as Crowder, Hillsong, Casting Crowns, and Chris Tomlin. His song “Lord, I Need You” received RIAA Platinum certification, while “Hold Us Together,” “All The People Said Amen,” and “Because He Lives (Amen)” achieved Gold certification. Maher is also an official Steinway Artist, having toured extensively and performed at major events, including multiple World Youth Day festivals where he led worship for millions, notably during Pope Francis’s visit to Rio de Janeiro in 2013.
