About

Luke Boyd, known professionally as Classified, was born on December 13, 1977, in Enfield, Nova Scotia, Canada. His musical journey began in 1995 with the release of his first full-length LP, “Time’s Up, Kid,” under his own production label, Half Life Records. Boyd initially released eight studio albums independently, establishing his presence in the Canadian hip-hop scene. A significant early achievement was his ninth album, “Trial & Error” (2003), which secured a nationwide distribution deal with Toronto-based URBNET Records in 2003. This album, featuring collaborations with Canadian artists like Eternia, DL Incognito, and Maestro, became one of the highest-selling independent rap albums in Canada in 2004. He also garnered early recognition through music videos for “Just the Way It Is” and “Unexpected,” supported by VideoFACT, and opened for prominent international artists such as Ludacris and Snoop Dogg.

Boyd’s career gained national momentum with his tenth album, “Boy-Cott-In the Industry” (2005), which reached #46 on SoundScan’s Canadian R&B/Hip-Hop albums chart. Singles such as “The Maritimes,” “5th Element,” “No Mistakes,” and “Find Out” achieved Top 20 status on MuchMusic and MTV Canada. The music video for “No Mistakes” earned him an MMVA for MuchVibe Best Rap Video, and the album received a Juno Award nomination for Rap Recording of the Year in 2006. His eleventh album, “Hitch Hikin’ Music,” released in 2006, continued this success, receiving another Juno Award nomination for Rap Recording of the Year in 2007, with its lead single “Find Out” winning the East Coast Music Award for Best Rap/Hip-Hop Single.

The period from 2008 to 2017 marked Classified’s mainstream breakthrough and national success. In 2008, he signed his first major label deal with Sony Music, leading to his twelfth studio album, “Self Explanatory” (2009). This album debuted at #25 on the Canadian Albums Chart, and the hit single “Anybody Listening” peaked at #52 on the Canadian Hot 100. In 2013, Classified achieved a career high with his self-titled fourteenth album, “Classified,” which debuted at #1 on the Canadian Albums Chart and was certified Platinum by Music Canada. The album’s lead single, “Inner Ninja,” reached #5 on the Canadian Hot 100 and has been certified 5x Platinum in digital downloads by Music Canada. This same year, he signed with Atlantic Records. Boyd has continued to release music, including his most recent album “Luke’s View” in 2024, and released a memoir, “Classified: Off the Beat ‘N Path,” in 2021, detailing his journey in the music industry while emphasizing the importance of staying connected to his roots.
