About

Maxïmo Park formed in Newcastle upon Tyne in 2000, initially operating as an instrumental avant-rock group. The founding members, Duncan Lloyd (guitar), Archis Tiku (bass), Lukas Wooller (keyboards), and Tom English (drums), performed several small shows, including Manchester’s ‘In the City’ festival. In 2003, seeking a dedicated frontman, current drummer Tom English’s then-girlfriend discovered Paul Smith singing Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition,” leading to his recruitment. The band’s chemistry solidified with Smith as lead vocalist, allowing the original members to focus on songwriting. Their early releases, including the 7″ red vinyl single “Graffiti” / “Going Missing” in 2004, funded by a friend, captured the attention of Steve Beckett from Warp Records. Beckett, after seeing the band perform, signed them to his predominantly electronic label, marking a significant turning point in their career.

Maxïmo Park’s debut album, “A Certain Trigger,” released in May 2005 on Warp Records, was critically acclaimed and reached number 15 on the UK Albums Chart, eventually achieving Gold certification in the UK. The album also earned a Mercury Prize nomination. The single “Graffiti” peaked at number 15 on the UK Singles Chart in May 2005. This success was followed by extensive touring across the UK, Japan, and the U.S., including being the first band to play the Ibiza Rocks festival and performing in China in 2006. Their second album, “Our Earthly Pleasures,” produced by Gil Norton and released in April 2007, became their most commercially successful to that date, peaking at number 2 on the UK Albums Chart and also achieving Gold certification. The lead single, “Our Velocity,” was a Top 10 hit.

Over two decades, Maxïmo Park has released eight studio albums, demonstrating continued artistic development and a commitment to their musical style. “Quicken the Heart” (2009) debuted at number 6 on the UK Albums Chart, and “The National Health” (2012) marked a shift towards more overtly political themes, reaching number 13. “Too Much Information” (2014) delved into more intimate, electronic-driven sounds, peaking at number 7. Despite lineup changes, notably the departures of Archis Tiku (2014) and Lukas Wooller (2019), the band continued as a trio, releasing “Risk to Exist” (2017) and achieving a number 2 chart position with “Nature Always Wins” (2021). Their most recent album “Stream of Life” (2024), continues to explore personal and societal themes, solidifying their enduring presence in the alternative rock landscape.
