About

John Clayton Mayer, born on October 16, 1977, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, began his musical journey at 13 after being inspired by Michael J. Fox’s guitar performance in “Back to the Future.” A neighbor’s Stevie Ray Vaughan cassette soon ignited his passion for blues music. He enrolled at Berklee College of Music in 1997 but departed after two semesters for Atlanta, where he performed in local clubs and refined his skills. Mayer gained early recognition through an independent EP, “Inside Wants Out” (1999), and by performing at the 2000 South by Southwest festival, leading to a contract with Aware Records, an imprint of Columbia Records.

Mayer’s early studio albums, “Room for Squares” (2001) and “Heavier Things” (2003), achieved both critical and commercial success. “Your Body Is a Wonderland” earned him a Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance in 2003, and “Daughters” won Song of the Year in 2005. By 2005, Mayer shifted toward blues and rock, forming the John Mayer Trio and releasing the live album “Try!” (2005) and the critically acclaimed studio album “Continuum” (2006). “Continuum” garnered two Grammy Awards, including Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for “Waiting on the World to Change.” He continued to release successful albums such as “Battle Studies” (2009), which debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200, and later, “Born and Raised” (2012) and “Paradise Valley” (2013), which explored folk and Americana influences. His career progression notably includes forming “Dead & Company” in 2015 with former Grateful Dead members, showcasing his adaptability and deep musical interests. His recent albums include “The Search for Everything” (2017) and “Sob Rock” (2021).

Beyond music, Mayer has engaged in various other ventures, including television hosting, comedy, and writing columns for magazines like Esquire. He is a recognized watch aficionado, contributing to Hodinkee and being appointed Creative Conduit for Audemars Piguet in 2024. He also launched a real-time satellite radio channel, “Life with John Mayer,” on Sirius XM in 2023. Throughout his career, Mayer has used his platform for philanthropy, supporting causes related to healthcare, education, and veterans, demonstrating a commitment beyond his artistic endeavors.
