About

Metric was founded in 1998 in Toronto, Ontario, by Emily Haines (lead vocals, synthesizers, guitar, tambourine, harmonica, piano) and James Shaw (guitar, synthesizers, theremin, backing vocals). Initially known as “Mainstream,” the duo released an EP before changing their name to Metric. The band later expanded with the addition of Joshua Winstead (bass, synthesizers, backing vocals) in 2002 and Joules Scott-Key (drums, percussion) in 2000, solidifying their four-member lineup. Their early career involved self-releasing music and extensive touring, building a foundation for their future success. They moved to New York City and signed a development deal with Warner Bros. Records in 1998, followed by a publishing deal with Chrysalis Records in London.

Metric released their first official studio album, “Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?”, in 2003, which was certified gold in Canada. This was followed by “Live It Out” in 2005, a platinum-selling album that earned nominations for the Polaris Music Prize and Juno Awards. The band’s entrepreneurial spirit led to a joint venture partnership between their label, Metric Music International, and Mom + Pop Records. Their fourth album, “Fantasies” (2009), became their best-selling album, moving 500,000 units and winning the Juno Award for “Alternative Album of the Year” and “Group of the Year.” Metric has consistently evolved their sound, incorporating elements of new wave, post-punk revival, and synth-pop, while also contributing to film soundtracks such as “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” and contributing to the “Twilight Saga: Eclipse” soundtrack in 2010. Emily Haines and James Shaw have also notably performed with Broken Social Scene.

The band continued to release critically acclaimed albums, including “Synthetica” (2012), which earned them multiple Juno Awards, and “Pagans in Vegas” (2015). In 2018, they released “Art of Doubt,” showcasing a return to a more guitar-driven sound. Their recent work includes “Formentera” (2022) and “Formentera II” (2023), further cementing their place as a significant force in indie rock. Metric’s commitment to their craft and their audience is evident in their consistent release of new music, extensive global touring, and engagement in various side projects and charitable initiatives. They were ranked 41st on Rolling Stone’s The 50 Greatest Canadian Artists of All Time in 2023.
