Michael Whitaker Smith was born on October 7, 1957, in Kenova, West Virginia. He developed an early love for music through his church, learning piano and singing in the choir. At age 10, he had a profound spiritual experience that shaped his early life profoundly. After high school, while attending Marshall University and playing in local bands, he struggled with substance abuse. A personal turning point in November 1979 led him to recommit to his faith and pursue Christian music. He then joined the contemporary Christian music group Higher Ground as a keyboardist, where his lead vocals were featured on the single “I Am.” This period marked the beginning of his professional music career, enabling him to overcome past struggles and fully immerse himself in his passion.
In 1981, Smith signed with Meadowgreen Music, writing gospel hits for notable artists like Sandi Patty, Kathy Troccoli, and Amy Grant. In 1983, he released his Grammy-nominated debut solo album, “The Michael W. Smith Project,” which included the popular song “Friends.” By 1984, following the release of “Michael W. Smith 2,” he was headlining his own tours. His career saw mainstream crossover success in 1990 with “Go West Young Man,” featuring the hit single “Place in This World,” which reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. Over the years, Smith has released numerous albums across various genres, including instrumental, worship, and Christmas-themed projects, consistently earning critical acclaim and commercial success.
Throughout his career, Michael W. Smith has achieved remarkable milestones, selling over 18 million albums. He is a three-time Grammy Award winner, an American Music Award recipient, and boasts 45 Dove Awards. In 1999, ASCAP honored him with the “Golden Note” Award for lifetime achievement in songwriting, and in 2014, he was recognized as a “cornerstone of Christian music” for his genre-shaping influence. He has recorded 31 No. 1 hit songs, earned fourteen gold albums, and five platinum albums. Beyond music, Smith has starred in two films and authored 14 books, continually expanding his reach and impact.
