Derek Ryan Smith, born on March 10, 1987, in Bloomington, Minnesota, is professionally known as Mod Sun. His early musical journey began by playing drums in pop punk bands such as the Semester and post-hardcore groups Four Letter Lie and Scary Kids Scaring Kids. This foundational experience in diverse rock genres provided a dynamic platform for his later musical explorations. In 2009, he shifted his focus to a solo rap career, marking a significant turning point in his artistic development.
Over the years, Mod Sun has released five solo studio albums, three EPs, and six mixtapes, demonstrating a consistent output and evolving sound. His debut album, “Look Up,” released on March 10, 2015, achieved commercial success by peaking at #1 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart. This was followed by “Movie” in 2017 and “BB” the same year. A notable stylistic shift occurred with his fourth album, “Internet Killed The Rockstar” (2021), which saw him return to his pop punk roots, co-directing the accompanying film “Downfalls High” with Machine Gun Kelly. This move solidified his versatility across musical genres and visual storytelling. His fifth studio album, “God Save the Teen,” released in 2023, continued this pop punk trajectory, further cementing his place in the alternative music scene.
Beyond music, Mod Sun is also an accomplished author, publishing the non-fiction book “Did I Ever Wake Up?” in 2012, followed by poetry books “My Dear Pink” (2015) and “So Long Los Angeles” (2018). He has also ventured into filmmaking, co-directing “Good Mourning” (2022) and appearing in other film and television roles. His career reflects a continuous drive for creative expression across various mediums, consistently showcasing his personal growth and artistic evolution.
