Neal Mccoy

Hubert Neal McGaughey Jr., known professionally as Neal McCoy, was born on July 30, 1958, in Jacksonville, Texas. Raised by a Filipino-American mother and an Irish-American father, McCoy was exposed to a diverse range of musical genres including country, rock, disco, and R&B. He began his musical journey singing in his church choir and later formed an R&B band before focusing on country music. Early in his career, he performed in various bars and clubs across Texas. A significant turning point came in 1981 when he won a talent contest hosted by Janie Fricke, which led to him securing a spot as an opening act for country music legend Charley Pride.

In 1988, working under the name Neal McGoy, he signed with the independent 16th Avenue Records, releasing singles such as ‘That’s How Much I Love You.’ He continued touring with Charley Pride until 1990, the same year the 16th Avenue label closed. He then signed with Atlantic Records, changing his professional name to Neal McCoy. His debut album, ‘At This Moment,’ was released in 1990. While his initial releases on Atlantic didn’t achieve significant chart success, his reputation for energetic live performances grew. His second album, ‘Where Forever Begins’ (1992), yielded his first American Top 40 country hit with its title track. McCoy’s breakout year was 1994 with the album ‘No Doubt About It,’ which featured two number-one singles, ‘No Doubt About It’ and ‘Wink,’ and achieved platinum certification.

Throughout the mid to late 1990s, McCoy enjoyed continued commercial success with two more platinum albums and a gold album, along with six additional Top 10 hits. His enduring career has seen him release 15 studio albums, with a recent highlight being ‘Pride: A Tribute to Charley Pride’ in 2013, honoring his longtime friend and mentor. Beyond music, McCoy is recognized for his humanitarian efforts, including 15 USO Tours, and his dedication to the East Texas Angel Network, a charity supporting children with terminal or life-threatening diseases in East Texas. He also garnered public attention for his daily recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance on Facebook, reaching a global audience.
