Generation Axe arrived on stage in 2016, when guitar virtuoso Steve Vai gathered a handpicked lineup of six-string legends into a single international rock and heavy metal supergroup. Rather than a conventional band, the collective was built as a touring unit, bringing together Vai with Zakk Wylde, Yngwie Malmsteen, Nuno Bettencourt of Extreme, and Tosin Abasi.
The group’s first North American tour ran in April and May 2016, followed by an Asian trek in April 2017. That same year, a show in Beijing, China supplied the material for their live album ‘Generation Axe – The Guitars That Destroyed the World: Live In China’, released in 2019. Further headline runs followed: another North American tour in November and December 2018, and a short Asian tour in November 2019, confirming the project as a recurring fixture rather than a one-off experiment.
In 2020, the ensemble added an unexpected chapter when Queen’s Brian May joined Wylde and the rest of Generation Axe for a six-guitar performance of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, compiled from recordings made at the musicians’ homes during the COVID-19 pandemic as part of AXS TV’s ‘At Home And Social With Nuno Bettencourt & Friends’ special.
