Nick Rivera Caminero, known professionally as Nicky Jam, was born on March 17, 1981, in Lawrence, Massachusetts, to a Dominican mother and a Puerto Rican father. At the age of ten, his family relocated to San Juan, Puerto Rico. He began his music career at age fourteen, releasing his first EP, “…Distinto a los demás,” in 1995. Early in his career, he formed the duo Los Cangris with Daddy Yankee, achieving success in Puerto Rico with singles like “En la Cama.” After the duo disbanded in 2004, a period of personal and professional challenges followed, including struggles with substance abuse. He moved to Medellín, Colombia, in 2007, a turning point that led to a revitalization of his career and a shift towards a more melodic musical style.
His career saw a resurgence with hits “Voy a Beber” and “Travesuras.” In 2015, he collaborated with Enrique Iglesias on “El Perdón,” which spent 30 weeks atop the Hot Latin Songs chart and earned him his first Latin Grammy for Best Urban Performance. His 2017 album, “Fénix,” symbolized his career rebirth, debuting at the top of the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart, earning 11 platinum certifications, and receiving a Latin Grammy nomination for Album of the Year. The album included the hit single “El Amante,” which reached significant chart positions, and featured collaborations with artists like Sean Paul and J Balvin. That same year, he made his acting debut in “XXX: Return of Xander Cage.”
In 2018, Nicky Jam collaborated with Will Smith and Era Istrefi on “Live It Up,” the official theme of the FIFA World Cup. His song “X” with J Balvin peaked at number 41 on the Billboard Hot 100, and its music video garnered over 200 million views in two weeks. He starred in and executive produced the Netflix biographical series “Nicky Jam: El Ganador” in November 2018. His 2019 album, “Íntimo,” was commercially successful and included singles such as “Atrévete” and “Whine Up.” He renewed his contract with Sony Music Latin in November 2019 and collaborated with Daddy Yankee again on “Muévelo,” featured in the film “Bad Boys for Life,” in which Nicky Jam also played a role. In 2021, he released the album “Infinity” and announced a subsequent tour.
