Night Ranger

Night Ranger, a hard rock band originating from San Francisco, California, formed in 1982. The group’s foundation stems from the pop/funk band Rubicon, where bassist Jack Blades, drummer Kelly Keagy, and guitarist Brad Gillis previously played. After Rubicon disbanded in 1979, these three musicians formed a trio named Stereo. They later added keyboardist Alan Fitzgerald in 1980, followed by a second guitarist, Jeff Watson, completing the initial five-member lineup. The band, initially performing as Stereo, then changed their name to Ranger, and eventually to Night Ranger in 1982 due to a trademark conflict. Their debut album, “Dawn Patrol,” was released the same year, and they secured a deal with MCA Records in 1983.

The band’s popularity escalated with their second album, “Midnight Madness,” released in 1983. This album produced significant hit singles such as “(You Can Still) Rock in America,” “When You Close Your Eyes” (number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100), and the power ballad “Sister Christian” (number five on the Billboard Hot 100 in June 1984). “Sister Christian” became a defining song for the band, contributing to their widespread recognition. Their third album, “7 Wishes” (1985), continued their success with additional hit singles: “Sentimental Street” (number eight), “Four in the Morning (I Can’t Take Anymore)” (number 19), and “Goodbye” (number 17). Between 1984 and 1987, Night Ranger also contributed songs to several film soundtracks, expanding their presence.

After a period of extensive touring and recording, the band experienced lineup changes. Alan Fitzgerald left in 1988 before the recording of their fifth album, “Man in Motion.” The band briefly split in 1989, with members pursuing individual projects, including Jack Blades forming the supergroup Damn Yankees. Night Ranger reformed in the early 1990s, with a temporary lineup shift that included Gary Moon, before the original five members reunited in 1996, releasing two more studio albums, “Neverland” (1997) and “Seven” (1998). Despite further member changes, including the departure of Jeff Watson in 2007 and the addition of Eric Levy and Keri Kelli, Night Ranger has continued to record and tour, releasing subsequent albums like “Somewhere in California” (2011), “High Road” (2014), “Don’t Let Up” (2017), and “ATBPO” (2021). The band has sold 17 million albums globally.
