Oh Chentaku, founded in 2007, is a Malaysian alternative rock band initially formed by Myo, Amber, and Naem. They began as a three-piece group with an emo pop-punk sound, later evolving into a progressive rock band. Their early discography includes two albums, ‘Heartbreak Ridge Was Never This Arrogant’ (2007) and ‘Suitcase, A Scarf and the Departure’ (2009), along with five EPs. The band is recognized for its blend of rock tunes with punk, pop, and electro influences. Despite operating without a major record label for a significant portion of their career, Oh Chentaku has maintained an active presence in the music scene, expanding their reach to audiences both locally and internationally.
Over the years, Oh Chentaku’s lineup expanded to include Jimmy (drums) and Jack (lead guitar), eventually consisting of six musicians. This expanded formation contributed to a more varied musical arrangement, incorporating elements from Rock N Roll, hard rock, metal, and emotional acoustic rock. Their career progression saw them perform on major stages globally, including tours in Dublin-London (2009), Amsterdam (2009), York-Barcelona (2010), and the Playden Showcase Singapore (2010), as well as extensive tours across Indonesia and Asia. A turning point occurred when lead singer Myo focused on the band, leading to their win at the ‘Battle of the Indie Bands GIG’ organized by TV9 Malaysia. Their participation in the reality TV program ‘Versus’ Season 2 in 2013 further increased their national profile, gaining them recognition even without winning the overall competition.
The band’s fourth full album, ‘YOUNGHEARTS’ (2014), was followed by a successful album tour and headlining performances at major local festivals like ‘Rock The World’. They continued their outreach with the ‘OCK Borneo Takeover Tour’ and the ‘OCK Kembara Kenchana Acoustic Tour’ in 2015, performing in eight states across Malaysia. Oh Chentaku’s music features both Malay and English lyrics, often including collaborations with other artists such as Yuna, Yas Matthews, and Altimet. Their song ‘Semangat Satria’ was selected as the soundtrack for the animated series ‘SATRIA – The Warriors of the 7 Elements’ and performed at the MIPCOM Festival 2014 in Cannes, France. The band continues to perform at various festivals, including Rock The World (2015/2016), Northern Music Festival (2016), Weekend At The Park (2016), Lovelifest (2017), Rockaway (2017), Art Of Speed (2017), and Rocktoberfest (2017). In 2018, they released the English single ‘Anugerah Of The Year’ from their own label, Oh Chentaku Records.
