About

Patti LaBelle, born Patricia Louise Holte on May 24, 1944, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, began her musical journey in the early 1960s. She first gained recognition as the lead singer of Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles. A decade later, the group evolved into Labelle, and in 1974, they achieved international success with the hit song “Lady Marmalade.” This period showcased her powerful vocals and laid the groundwork for a distinguished career across multiple entertainment avenues. In 1976, LaBelle embarked on a solo career, releasing her self-titled debut album in 1977. This marked the beginning of extensive success over five decades, selling over 50 million records. She expanded her career into acting, appearing in films and television shows while also becoming an author of bestselling memoirs and cookbooks.

Her solo career gained significant momentum in 1984 with the singles “If Only You Knew,” “Love, Need and Want You,” and the crossover pop hit “New Attitude” from the ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ soundtrack. In 1986, her album ‘Winner in You’ reached number one on the pop charts, featuring the successful duet “On My Own” with Michael McDonald. LaBelle earned Grammys for ‘Burnin” in 1992 and the live album ‘Live! One Night Only’ in 1999, demonstrating her enduring vocal prowess and performance caliber. Beyond music, she ventured into entrepreneurship with a highly successful food brand, notably her “Patti’s Sweet Potato Pie.” A viral YouTube video in 2015 led to millions of pies being sold, cementing her status as a successful businesswoman. In 2017, she released her first jazz album, ‘Bel Hommage,’ further showcasing her versatility.

Throughout her career, LaBelle has been recognized with numerous accolades, including inductions into the Grammy Hall of Fame, Hollywood Walk of Fame, Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame, and the Apollo Theater Hall of Fame. In 2007, she received the World Music Awards Legend Award, and in 2011, she was honored with the BET Lifetime Achievement Award. Her influence transcends music, as she has consistently used her platform for charity work, supporting causes like diabetes, AIDS, Alzheimer’s, and cancer, and advocating for the LGBTQ+ community. In 2019, Philadelphia honored her with her own street name, “Patti LaBelle Way,” acknowledging her profound cultural impact.
