Few American rock bands have made as strong a mark on mainstream rock as Pop Evil. Formed in North Muskegon, Michigan, in 2001 by vocalist Leigh Kakaty, the band grew out of TenFive, a late-1990s project Kakaty built with guitarist Jason Reed. After TenFive dissolved, Kakaty and drummer Dylan Allison pressed forward, playing club dates and cover shows for years to fund their own demos.
That persistence paid off with independent releases: the album War of the Roses in 2004 and the Ready or Not EP in 2006. These early records built the band a regional following and proved their work ethic, with the members handling booking, promotion, and touring on their own terms while refining a hard rock sound that blended heavy riffs with melodic, radio-ready choruses.
A referral to talent scout Tracy Jule in 2007 changed the band’s course. That connection led to a management deal with G&G Entertainment in 2008, which in turn opened the door to wider exposure and a label partnership. The result was the breakthrough album Lipstick on the Mirror, which pushed Pop Evil from the Michigan club circuit onto national rock radio and set the stage for years of touring, charting singles, and continued growth in the American rock scene.
