Quicksand is a pioneering American post-hardcore band that emerged from the vibrant New York City music scene in 1990. Founded by frontman Walter Schreifels, who previously gained acclaim with Gorilla Biscuits, the band quickly made a name for themselves with their self-titled EP released through Revelation Records. Their unique sound, drawing comparisons to influential bands like Fugazi and Helmet, set the stage for their major-label debut, “Slip,” in 1993. This album showcased their innovative approach to post-hardcore, featuring the hit single “Dine Alone” and selling over 100,000 copies, solidifying their place in the genre.
Following the success of “Slip,” Quicksand released their second album, “Manic Compression,” in 1995, which reached No. 135 on the Billboard 200 Chart. The band supported this release with extensive touring, sharing stages with iconic acts such as Rage Against the Machine and The Offspring. Despite internal challenges leading to their breakup in 1995, Quicksand’s influence continued to resonate within the music community, inspiring countless artists and fans alike.
After a brief reunion in the late 1990s, Quicksand returned to the spotlight in 2012, performing at the Revelation Records 25th Anniversary Shows. This marked the beginning of a new chapter, culminating in the release of their third album, “Interiors,” in 2017, after a 22-year hiatus. The album was well-received, showcasing their evolution while retaining the essence of their original sound.
In 2021, Quicksand released their fourth studio album, “Distant Populations,” further demonstrating their enduring creativity and relevance in the music scene. With a lineup that now includes guitarist Stephen Brodsky, the band continues to captivate audiences with their dynamic performances and innovative music, celebrating over three decades of impactful contributions to the post-hardcore genre.
