Basement formed in September 2009 in Ipswich, Suffolk, England, following the dissolution of the pop punk band In This for Fun. The band chose their name to be short and without significant meaning. Their journey began with the release of their debut EP, “Songs About the Weather,” in May 2010. Shortly after, in August of the same year, they signed with Run for Cover Records. Their first full-length album, “I Wish I Could Stay Here,” was released in 2011 through Run For Cover Records, which they supported with tours in Australia and two American tours alongside bands like Daylight.
In 2012, prior to the release of their second album, “Colourmeinkindness,” Basement announced an indefinite hiatus due to personal commitments. “Colourmeinkindness” was released on October 23, charting at number 188 on the US Billboard 200. The hiatus concluded on January 29, 2014, with the band confirming their return via social media. In June 2014, they recorded and released the EP “Further Sky,” featuring two new songs and a cover. This period included extensive touring across Australia, Japan, and America, with all American dates selling out. Subsequent albums “Promise Everything” (2016) and “Beside Myself” (2018) continued their career progression, with the former charting in Australia, the UK, and the US, and “Beside Myself” leading to a supporting tour with Weezer and Pixies in 2019.
Following a second hiatus in 2019, the band re-emerged in 2021, announcing a performance at Outbreak Fest 2022 to celebrate the anniversaries of their early albums. This led to a full reunion, including US tour dates, an appearance at the When We Were Young festival, and recommitment to Run For Cover Records. The band’s musical style has been categorized as alternative rock, emo, post-hardcore, and soft grunge, evolving from early pop punk influences. They have cited bands such as The Ataris, The Promise Ring, and Jimmy Eat World as significant inspirations.
