Shannon, born Brenda Shannon Greene, built a foundational career in music with her distinctive ‘Shannon Sound,’ transitioning from jazz ensembles to becoming a defining voice in freestyle and dance-pop. After achieving a groundbreaking commercial success with ‘Let The Music Play’ in the fall of 1983, Shannon established herself as a defining voice in freestyle and dance-pop. The 12-inch single, released on Emergency Records, rapidly became a significant dance-club hit, selling a million copies and reaching number 2 on the R&B charts and number 8 on the Billboard Pop charts. Produced by Mark Liggett and Chris Barbosa, and written by Barbosa and Ed Chisolm, the track introduced ‘the Shannon Sound’a distinctive style characterized by a prominent, staccato bass drum and electro-synth bass, accented with ‘steel-drum’ like synthesizers.
The album’s title track notably became her third single to hit number 1 on the Dance Chart. Her third album, ‘Love Goes All the Way,’ followed in 1986. After seeking release from her contract with Atlantic Records in 1987, she expanded her creative work into soundtracks and jingles, contributing the track ‘Criminal’ to the film ‘Fatal Beauty.’ Demonstrating her versatility beyond music, Shannon also pursued acting, graduating from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City in 1987. In 1998, Shannon collaborated on several multi-tracks with esteemed producers Todd Terry, Tony Moran, and Germany’s Sash!, which resulted in the EU dance hit ‘Move Mania.’ She was featured on VH-1’s ‘Where Are They Now’ in 1999.
Shannon maintains an active performing schedule, continuing to tour and engage audiences globally.
