Son Rompe Pera is a vibrant Mexican fusion band that has been captivating audiences since its formation in 2017 by brothers Jesús “Kacho” Gama and Allan “Mongo” Gama. Based in Naucalpan, a suburb of Mexico City, the band primarily plays cumbia while integrating traditional Mexican marimba music with genres such as danzón, rock, and ska. Their unique sound is a tribute to their late father, José Dolores “Batuco” Gama Melchor, who instilled in them a deep appreciation for marimba music from a young age, performing alongside him at local events and celebrations.
The band’s breakthrough came when they were discovered at La Lagunilla flea market, leading to performances with renowned artists like Celso Piña and Sonido Gallo Negro. Their international presence grew after a successful trip to Chile, where they played over forty gigs at major festivals and collaborated with prominent musicians in the cumbia scene. Their dynamic performances and energetic stage presence have made them a staple in the contemporary cumbia movement, showcasing their innovative blend of traditional and modern influences.
In 2022, Son Rompe Pera recorded a session for NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts and performed at the prestigious Vive Latino festival, further solidifying their reputation as a leading act in the genre. Their debut album, “Batuco,” released in 2020, is a heartfelt homage to their father and marks their entry into the international music scene, featuring collaborations with various artists.
With a lineup that includes conga, percussion, guitar, and marimba, Son Rompe Pera delivers a full-bodied sound that resonates with audiences across Latin America and beyond. Their commitment to preserving and evolving the marimba tradition while infusing it with punk and garage influences sets them apart as a truly unique band, making them a must-see act for fans of innovative world music.
