Underoath formed in Ocala, Florida, in 1997 with Dallas Taylor and Luke Morton, later joined by Aaron Gillespie, Christopher Dudley, Corey Steger, and Octavio Fernandez. The band initially gained recognition on the DIY circuit, playing VFW halls and youth centers. They signed with Takehold Records in 1999, releasing their debut album, “Act of Depression,” which sold over 2,000 copies. This was followed by “Cries of the Past” in 2000, selling 3,000 copies. In 2001, they signed to Solid State Records, a subsidiary of Tooth & Nail Records. Following lineup changes, including the departure of Dallas Taylor and the arrival of Spencer Chamberlain as lead vocalist in 2003, the band released “They’re Only Chasing Safety” in 2004. This album marked a significant commercial success, selling nearly 100,000 copies in its first week and eventually achieving Gold certification with over 500,000 copies sold.
The band’s career continued to evolve with the release of “Define the Great Line” in 2006, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart and also earned Gold certification. This period showcased their ability to blend diverse musical influences. “Lost in the Sound of Separation” followed in 2008, debuting at No. 8 on the Billboard 200. In 2010, Aaron Gillespie departed, and Daniel Davison joined as the new drummer, leading to the release of “Ø (Disambiguation)” later that year. The band announced a hiatus in 2012, performing their final show in January 2013, before reuniting in 2015 with Gillespie’s return.
Their reunion led to the 2018 album “Erase Me,” released via Fearless Records, which included the Grammy-nominated single “On My Teeth.” This album marked a public shift away from their previous Christian musical identity. “Voyeurist” was released in 2022, further demonstrating their evolving sound. In March 2025, Underoath released their tenth studio album, “The Place After This One.” Throughout their trajectory, Underoath has established itself as an influential force in the heavy rock landscape, known for continuous artistic development and sustained impact.
