About

Jennifer Vashti Bunyan was born on March 2, 1945, in South Tyneside, England. Her family relocated to London when she was six months old. In the early 1960s, she studied at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art at Oxford University. However, her dedication to music, specifically learning guitar and songwriting, led to her expulsion in 1964. At 18, a visit to New York City introduced her to Bob Dylan’s music, solidifying her decision to pursue a career as a musician.

In 1965, Bunyan’s career began with a contract from Rolling Stones’ manager Andrew Loog Oldham, who released her first single, “Some Things Just Stick in Your Mind,” featuring Jimmy Page on guitar. This was followed by “Train Song” in 1966. After these releases received limited commercial attention, Bunyan, along with Robert Lewis, embarked on a 650-mile journey to the Isle of Skye in a horse-drawn wagon. This two-year journey inspired the songs for her debut album, “Just Another Diamond Day,” released in 1970. Despite warm reviews, the album sold few copies, leading Bunyan to withdraw from the music industry for three decades to raise her three children.

Her career experienced a revival in 2000 when “Just Another Diamond Day” was re-released to critical acclaim and acquired a cult following among a new generation of folk artists. This led to Bunyan recording new music, starting with a guest vocal appearance on Piano Magic’s “Crown of the Lost” in 2002. She released her second album, “Lookaftering,” in 2005, and her third and final album, “Heartleap,” in 2014. Bunyan continued to collaborate with contemporary artists and her music gained further recognition through documentaries and commercial placements, cementing her influence as “the Godmother of Freak Folk.”
