Jason Dardo, known professionally as Violet Chachki, was born on June 13, 1992, in Atlanta, Georgia. They began performing as Violet Chachki at 19 years old, taking inspiration from Jennifer Tilly’s character in the film Bound and the Yiddish word ‘tchotchke.’ Early in their career, Dardo performed in local drag shows in Marietta, Georgia, and won Miss New Faces on Ponce in Atlanta. They briefly attended the Savannah College of Art and Design for fashion design but left to concentrate on their drag career. Dardo became a regular performer at The Other Show at Jungle in Atlanta, increasing their local recognition and providing opportunities to perform with established drag artists like Alaska Thunderfuck and Lady Bunny.
In 2013, Dardo participated in “Legendary Children,” a project highlighting Atlanta’s drag scene, with photographs exhibited at Gallery 1526. A controversy arose when images featuring their genitals and a gaff were censored, drawing attention from Vice magazine. The following year, Dardo was featured on the cover of Captain Murphy’s (Flying Lotus) single “Cosplay” and appeared in its Adult Swim commercial. In 2015, after an unsuccessful audition for Season 6, Dardo joined the seventh season of RuPaul’s Drag Race as Violet Chachki. They were noted for their immaculate aesthetic and fashion sense throughout the competition, ultimately winning the season and a $100,000 prize. On June 2, 2015, Dardo released their single “Bettie” from their debut EP, “Gagged.”
Violet Chachki is also recognized for their skills in aerial hoop, aerial silk, and burlesque. In January 2017, Dardo joined the cast of ‘The Art of Teese’ alongside Dita Von Teese. Later that year, they made history as the first drag queen to front a major lingerie ad campaign for Bettie Page Lingerie.
