About

The White Stripes, consisting of Jack White (born John Gillis) on guitar, keyboards, piano, and vocals, and Meg White on drums, percussion, and vocals, formed in Detroit, Michigan, in 1997. Their early career involved navigating the Detroit music scene, releasing singles like “Let’s Shake Hands” (1998) and “Lafayette Blues” (1998) on independent labels. Their self-titled debut album, “The White Stripes,” released in 1999, was produced by Jack White and engineered by Jim Diamond, dedicated to Delta blues musician Son House. Jack White emphasized the raw, powerful, and Detroit-sounding nature of this initial release. The duo were noted for their mysterious public image, consistent red, white, and black aesthetic, and minimalist approach to music, which eschewed a bass player and utilized a lo-fi recording style.

After their divorce in March 2000, Meg White convinced Jack to continue the band. They released their second album, “De Stijl,” in 2000, recorded in Jack’s living room, which demonstrated their “scuzzy garage rock” fusion. The band gained significant mainstream attention with their third album, “White Blood Cells” (2001), re-released by V2 Records, which garnered critical acclaim for its stripped-down sound. This album produced popular singles like “Fell in Love with a Girl,” notable for its Lego-animation music video by Michel Gondry, which won three MTV Video Music Awards in 2002. They continued their success with “Elephant” (2003), their major label debut, which was recorded in two weeks using antiquated equipment and became their first UK chart-topping album and US Top 10 album. “Elephant” earned them their first Grammy Awards for Best Alternative Music Album and Best Rock Song for “Seven Nation Army” in 2004.

The White Stripes continued to experiment with their sound, releasing “Get Behind Me Satan” (2005), which featured piano-driven melodies and instruments like the marimba, earning another Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album in 2006. Their sixth and final album, “Icky Thump” (2007), marked a return to their punk, garage rock, and blues influences. The album yielded their first Top 40 single, “Icky Thump,” and another Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album in 2008. The band embarked on a comprehensive Canadian tour in 2007, captured in the documentary “Under Great White Northern Lights.” Following a hiatus and a final live performance on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” in 2009, the White Stripes officially announced their dissolution in 2011. Jack White continued a solo career, while Meg White largely retired from music.
