Widowspeak is an acclaimed American indie rock band hailing from Brooklyn, New York, formed in 2010 by Tacoma, Washington natives Molly Hamilton and Michael Stasiak. The duo quickly expanded their sound by collaborating with guitarist Robert Earl Thomas, leading to the release of their self-titled debut album in August 2011. This album garnered critical acclaim, with the standout single “Harsh Realm” featured in the popular television series American Horror Story, showcasing their ability to resonate with a wide audience and solidifying their place in the indie music scene.
Following their successful debut, Widowspeak continued to evolve their sound and lineup. In 2012, they welcomed bassist Pamela Garavano-Coolbaugh, enhancing their live performances as they toured extensively. The band began working on their sophomore album, Almanac, which was recorded in a historic barn in the Hudson River Valley and released in January 2013. This album further established their reputation, earning them recognition as one of Fuse TV’s 30 must-see artists at SXSW.
The band’s commitment to artistic growth is evident in their subsequent releases. In 2015, they unveiled All Yours, followed by Expect the Best in 2017, both of which were recorded at Marcata Recording in New Paltz, New York. These albums marked a return to their roots while exploring new sonic territories, showcasing Hamilton’s songwriting prowess.
Widowspeak’s discography continued to expand with the release of Plum in 2020 and The Jacket in 2022, both under Captured Tracks. Their consistent output and dedication to their craft have solidified Widowspeak’s status as a prominent force in the indie rock genre, captivating audiences with their unique sound and heartfelt lyrics.
