Willi Carlisle

Willi Carlisle was born on May 29, 1989, in Kansas, United States. He grew up in a musical family, with his father being a polka musician, which exposed him to American folk, bluegrass, and country music from a young age. Carlisle participated in school musicals and was a member of his school’s choir. He pursued higher education at the University of Arkansas, where he earned an MFA in poetry. His intention behind this academic path was to enhance his folk music writing. During this period, Carlisle recognized a gap between contemporary poetry and its accessibility to a general audience. This insight motivated him to write music that connected with a broader demographic.

Carlisle’s musical career officially began in 2016. His music draws from traditional American folk, country, and punk influences. His discography includes several albums: “To Tell You the Truth” (2018), “Peculiar, Missouri” (2022) released on Free Dirt Records, “Critterland” (2024) on Signature Sounds Recordings, and “The Magnolia Sessions” (2024) on Anti-Corp. His songs frequently address themes such as drug abuse, queer life, and rural American experiences. Carlisle’s raw and honest approach to songwriting has garnered attention for its ability to both comfort and challenge listeners. He has been recognized as the 2025 recipient of the FreshGrass Composition Commission, highlighting his contributions to contemporary folk music.

Beyond his albums, Carlisle has released numerous singles and EPs, including “Too Nice to Mean Much” (2016), “Tulsa’s Last Magician” (2022), and “Critterland” (2023) as a single. His work often involves collaborations, such as songwriting retreats. Carlisle is openly queer, and his personal experiences inform the themes present in his music. He is known for his multi-instrumental abilities, playing guitar, banjo, fiddle, accordion, concertina, and harmonica.
