Cameron Jibril Thomaz, known professionally as Wiz Khalifa, was born on September 8, 1987, in Minot, North Dakota. His early life involved frequent moves due to his parents’ military service, including residences in Germany, the United Kingdom, and Japan, before his family settled in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, around 1996. He attended Taylor Allderdice High School in Pittsburgh. Khalifa began writing and performing his own lyrics before he was a teenager, a passion that led him to regularly record music at I.D. Labs studio by the age of 15. The studio management, impressed by his talent, provided him with free recording time and mentorship, an opportunity that significantly influenced his early artistic development.
His professional music career commenced with the release of his debut album, “Show and Prove,” in 2006, following a 2005 mixtape titled “Prince of the City: Welcome to Pistolvania.” The same year, Rolling Stone magazine recognized him as an “artist to watch.” In 2007, Khalifa signed with Warner Bros. Records, and his Eurodance-influenced single, “Say Yeah,” received urban radio airplay, charting on the Rhythmic Top 40 and Hot Rap Tracks in 2008. After parting with Warner Bros. in 2009 due to album release delays, he independently released his second album, “Deal or No Deal.” His mixtape, “Kush and Orange Juice,” released in April 2010 as a free download, became a trending topic on Twitter and Google, demonstrating his grassroots fan base.
Khalifa signed with Atlantic Records in July 2010. His debut single for the label, “Black and Yellow,” dedicated to his hometown of Pittsburgh, peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned two Grammy Award nominations. His major label debut album, “Rolling Papers,” released in 2011, reached number two on the Billboard 200. Further albums like “O.N.I.F.C.” (2012) and “Blacc Hollywood” (2014) also saw commercial success, with “Blacc Hollywood” becoming his first album to top the Billboard 200. In 2015, he released “See You Again” for the “Furious 7” soundtrack, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 12 non-consecutive weeks, achieved diamond certification, and garnered three Grammy nominations. Beyond music, Khalifa has pursued acting roles in television and film, including “Dickinson,” “The Eric Andre Show,” and “Mac & Devin Go to High School.” He also founded Taylor Gang Entertainment in 2008 and launched his cannabis brand, Khalifa Kush, in 2016.
