Liu Yifei, born An Feng on August 25, 1987, in Wuhan, Hubei, began her career in entertainment at a young age, modeling at eight and receiving training in singing, dancing, and piano. She moved to the United States at age 10 with her mother, residing there for four years, before returning to China in June 2002 to pursue acting and modeling. In September 2002, at age 15, she was accepted into the Performance Institute of Beijing Film Academy. Her initial television roles quickly garnered attention, including her debut in “The Story of a Noble Family” in 2003, followed by a significant role as Wang Yuyan in “Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils” based on Jinyong’s novel, earning her the nickname “Fairy Sister.”
Her career progressed with notable performances in television series such as “The Legend of Sword and Fairy” in 2004, which further boosted her popularity. After graduating from the Beijing Film Academy in July 2006, she starred in “The Return of the Condor Heroes,” a role well-received across China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan. Liu expanded into music in August 2005, signing with Sony Music Entertainment Japan. Her debut album, “Liu Yifei,” was released in August 2006 across Asia, incorporating various musical styles including rap and soft rock. That same year, she released a Japanese album, with the single “The Gate of Late Night” chosen as a theme for a Tokyo TV animation series.
Liu made a successful transition to film, participating in international co-productions and major Hollywood films. Her role as Golden Sparrow in “The Forbidden Kingdom” (2008) marked her first Hollywood production. She continued to star in a range of films, including “Love in Disguise” (2010), “A Chinese Ghost Story” (2011), and “The Four” film series (2012-2014). Her international prominence was solidified by her casting as the titular character in Disney’s live-action adaptation of “Mulan” (2020). She has consistently been recognized on the Forbes China Celebrity 100 list and has won several acting awards, including the Best Actress Award at the 13th Macau International Television Festival in 2022 for “A Dream of Splendor.”
