Yola, born Yolanda Claire Quartey on July 31, 1983, in Bristol, England, initially faced discouragement from her family regarding a music career. Despite these challenges, and a period of homelessness in her early twenties, Yola pursued her passion, first as a guest vocalist and songwriter for British musical acts such as Massive Attack, Chase & Status, and Duke Dumont. This foundational work in the music industry honed her skills and provided experience performing with established artists.
Her solo career began following her mother’s passing in 2013, with the release of her first solo EP, “Orphan Offering,” in 2016. A significant turning point arrived in February 2019 with her debut studio album, “Walk Through Fire,” produced by Dan Auerbach. This album, which received critical acclaim and multiple Grammy nominations including Best New Artist, Best Americana Album, Best American Roots Song for “Faraway Look,” and Best American Roots Performance for “Faraway Look,” established her as a prominent voice in country soul and Americana music. Her success continued with her second album, “Stand for Myself” (2021), also critically lauded and earning two more Grammy nominations. In 2022, Yola made her acting debut portraying Sister Rosetta Tharpe in Baz Luhrmann’s film “Elvis,” further expanding her artistic reach. She later made her Broadway debut in 2024 as Persephone in “Hadestown” and released the EP “My Way” in 2025.
Throughout her career, Yola has collaborated with various artists, including The Highwomen and Sheryl Crow on the single “Hold On,” and PJ Morton on “Give the People What They Want.” She has performed at major festivals like Newport Folk Festival in 2019, where she was highlighted as a standout performer, and has made appearances on television shows such as “CBS This Morning’s” Saturday Sessions. Her work has garnered her several awards, including UK Artist of the Year at the UK Americana Awards in 2017, 2020, and 2022, and UK Album of the Year for “Walk Through Fire” in 2020 and “Stand for Myself” in 2022. She has also been recognized with nominations for the Americana Music Honors & Awards and the Country Music Association Awards, solidifying her position as a respected and influential artist.
