Yvette Young, born on June 28, 1991, in San Jose, California, is an American musician and composer. She comes from a musical family and began her musical training at a young age, taking piano lessons at four and violin lessons at seven. Young graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Her career began in 2009 with the independent release of videos showcasing her musical abilities. She taught herself guitar by ear, often using a distinct polyphonic style influenced by her piano background, developing a unique approach to the instrument that avoids traditional chord shapes and incorporates various tunings. This distinctive technique involves singing musical parts and then translating them to the guitar. In addition to her music, Young is also a visual artist, creating illustrations and paintings that have been featured on her album covers and custom-painted guitars, including a notable commission for Willow Smith. She has also transitioned from teaching art to teaching music, offering master courses on guitar.
Young’s discography includes several solo EPs such as “Acoustics EP” (2014) and “Acoustics EP 2” (2017), alongside a split EP with Natalie Evans in 2015. Her singles include “Sojourner” (2017), “Rivulets” (2018), and “Sprout” (2020), an online collaboration with YouTuber Ichika Nita. With her band Covet, Young has released albums including “Effloresce” (2018), “Technicolor” (2020), and “Catharsis” (2023). In 2023, Rolling Stone recognized her contributions to guitar, naming her the 155th greatest guitarist of all time. Her musical reach expanded into film in July 2025, when she confirmed her contribution to the soundtrack for the James Gunn-directed “Superman” film.
Her career includes notable brand partnerships and media appearances. Young was featured in a Super Bowl LV commercial for Logitech in February 2021 and maintains a partnership with the company, providing tutorials and tips on their website. She has debuted signature guitar models with Ibanez, including the YY10 and YY20, and frequently uses Ibanez Talman Prestige guitars and Vox AC amps in her performances. Young’s dedication to her craft and unique playing style have established her as a prominent figure in the math rock and progressive music scenes, continually pushing artistic boundaries through her solo work and collaborations.
