About

Adam Daniel Kinzinger was born on February 27, 1978, in Kankakee, Illinois, the son of Betty Jo, an elementary school teacher, and Rus Kinzinger, a CEO of religious faith-based organizations. He spent part of his youth in Jacksonville, Florida, before being raised primarily in Bloomington, Illinois. Kinzinger graduated from Normal Community West High School in 1996 and earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Illinois State University in 2000. In 1998, while still a student, he was elected as a county board member in McLean County, defeating an incumbent and becoming one of the youngest board members in the county’s history at age 20. He served on the board until his resignation in 2003.

Kinzinger began a distinguished military career in 2003, joining the United States Air Force and being commissioned as a second lieutenant. He earned his pilot wings and served as a KC-135 Stratotanker pilot, flying missions in various international locations such as South America, Guam, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Later, he transitioned to flying RC-26 surveillance aircraft, undertaking two deployments to Iraq. His service in the Afghanistan and Iraq Wars earned him six Air Medals. Progressing through the ranks, he achieved lieutenant colonel and continued his commitment with the Wisconsin Air National Guard, including a deployment to the Mexico–United States border in 2019, before eventually retiring after 20 years of service.

In 2010, Kinzinger initiated his congressional career, winning election to the U.S. House of Representatives for Illinois’ 11th congressional district. Following redistricting after the 2010 census, he successfully ran in the 16th district, defeating incumbent Don Manzullo in the 2012 Republican primary. He was re-elected in 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2020. During his tenure, he served on significant committees including the House Committee on Energy and Commerce and the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Noteworthy legislative efforts include sponsoring the Veteran Emergency Medical Technician Support Act of 2013 and the American Cybersecurity Literacy Act. He became a prominent figure for his vocal opposition to Donald Trump’s claims of voter fraud and participation in the House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack. After choosing not to seek re-election in 2022, he joined CNN as a senior political commentator in January 2023 and released his memoir, “Renegade,” which became a New York Times best seller in October 2023. He established the Country First PAC to advocate for principled leadership within the Republican Party and endorsed Kamala Harris for president in the 2024 election.
