Geno Auriemma

Before his leadership, the program had recorded only one winning season. Prior to his tenure at UConn, Auriemma honed his coaching expertise through assistant positions at Bishop McDevitt High School (1977-1979), Saint Joseph’s University (1978-1979), and Bishop Kenrick High School (1979-1981). He further developed his strategic approach as an assistant coach for the University of Virginia Cavaliers women’s team from 1981 to 1985. The program has also claimed 61 conference championships, solidifying its status as a premier force in collegiate athletics.

Recognizing his immense contributions to the sport, Auriemma was inducted into both the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006. His legacy was further honored with induction into the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame in 2007. In 2017, Auriemma reached a significant personal milestone by securing his 1,000th career win. Beyond the collegiate court, Auriemma extended his influence as the head coach of the U.S.

Women’s National Team for eight years, commencing in 2009. During this period, he led the team to two Olympic gold medals in 2012 and 2016, along with two FIBA World Championships in 2010 and 2014. Under his mentorship, 28 Huskies have collectively earned 50 WBCA All-American honors, and a University of Connecticut player has been named National Player of the Year an impressive 15 times. His commitment to holistic development is underscored by the 100 percent graduation rate among his four-year student-athletes, demonstrating a strong emphasis on academic success alongside athletic excellence.

He also maintains the best win percentage in the sport at an exceptional .883, further cementing his position as one of basketball’s most successful and impactful coaches. His career continues to set benchmarks for excellence, consistently delivering championship-level performance and developing elite talent.
