Adrian Gonzalez was born in San Diego, California, on May 8, 1982, to Mexican parents. He spent his early childhood in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, where his father owned an air-conditioner business, and he began his baseball journey alongside his brothers. The family relocated to Bonita, California, in 1990. Gonzalez attended Eastlake High School in Chula Vista, California, where his exceptional senior year performance, including a .645 batting average, 13 home runs, and 34 RBIs, elevated his draft profile.
His professional baseball career began in 2000 when the Florida Marlins selected him as the first overall pick in the MLB draft, signing him with a notable $3 million bonus. After progressing through various minor league teams, including the Kane County Cougars where he was named Midwest League MVP and Prospect of the Year in 2001, Gonzalez faced a wrist injury. This led to his trade to the Texas Rangers in 2003, with whom he made his MLB debut on April 18, 2004. He later joined the San Diego Padres in 2006, where he established himself as a prominent player, earning three All-Star selections and two Gold Glove Awards. His consistent performance led to multiple team MVP awards with the Padres.
Gonzalez continued his career with the Boston Red Sox in 2011, signing a seven-year, $154 million extension. During his time with the Red Sox, he achieved several milestones, including his 1,000th career hit and a second-place finish in the Home Run Derby. In August 2012, he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he led the majors in RBIs in 2014 and received a Silver Slugger Award, a Gold Glove Award, a Fielding Bible Award, and the Wilson Defensive Player of the Year Award. Injuries impacted his later career, leading to stints with the New York Mets before his eventual retirement from MLB. He briefly returned to play in the Mexican League for the Mariachis de Guadalajara in 2021 before officially retiring from professional baseball in February 2022.
