Aidan Gomez established himself as a seminal figure in artificial intelligence as a co-author of the groundbreaking 2017 research paper, ‘Attention Is All You Need.’ While at Google Brain, this paper introduced the Transformer neural network architecture, which has since profoundly influenced the AI industry and was instrumental in the development of leading technologies like ChatGPT. In June 2017, Gomez also co-authored ‘One Model to Learn Them All’ and ‘Depthwise Separable Convolutions for Neural Machine Translation,’ followed in July 2017 by ‘The Reversible Residual Network: Backpropagation Without Storing Activations.’ During this period, he also founded FOR.ai, an initiative dedicated to supporting collaborative machine learning techniques. In 2019, Gomez paused his PhD studies to co-found Cohere, an enterprise-focused artificial intelligence company specializing in the implementation of AI for chatbots, search engines, and various other business products. As CEO of Cohere, he has driven the company’s growth, delivering cutting-edge AI solutions to a broad range of industries.
That same year, alongside Cohere co-founders Ivan Zhang and Nick Frosst, he topped Maclean’s AI Trailblazers Power List, acknowledging their leadership in shaping the future of AI. In 2024, he was granted his PhD in computer science from the University of Oxford. Further expanding his involvement in technology-driven industries, Gomez was elected to the board of Rivian, an electric vehicle manufacturer, in April 2025. He continues to lead Cohere as CEO, solidifying its position at the forefront of enterprise AI innovation and impacting the technological landscape through pioneering research and strategic business development.
